Competition for buying spectrum in premium 900 MHz band in the forthcoming auction is heating up with Videocon announcing its intentions to enter the fray. Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, and Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJI), a subsidiary of RIL, are also expected to bid for it.
“We are very serious about Delhi circle and are planning to bid for 900 Mhz band in the upcoming auction,” said Arvind Bali, director and CEO of Videocon Telecom. “Once we get 900 MHz band spectrum, we will be able to offer high-quality data and voice services.”
The company has appointed Deloitte to evaluate the business case for bidding.
“The sharp cut in reserve spectrum floor price for the 900 MHz spectrum has made it very attractive and presents a big opportunity,” said Bali.
In the auction to be held in January, the government will auction spectrum in 1,800 Mhz and 900 Mhz bands. Spectrum in 900 Mhz band is very efficient as the cost of infrastructure comes down drastically. RJI may bid for spectrum in 900 Mhz band in the auction for three circles — Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
