business Updated: Jul 08, 2009 21:32 IST

Leaders of the ‘joint struggle´ against a Coca-Cola plant at Plachimada in Palakkad district, have asked a government-appointed high-level committee to study pollution and other damage caused by the unit to recommend necessary action against the company.

In a memorandum submitted to committee chairman K Jayakumar, Adivasi Protection Council and Plachimada Solidarity Committee, said the company should pay compensation to the people affected by poisonous effluence from the plant.

They alleged that the plant was also responsible for the environmental pollution and groundwater shortage being experienced in the area.

The terms of reference of the committee should be fixed in accordance with the Pollution Control Act, 1986, the memorandum said and sought formation of a legal authority to pursue the demand for compensation to people affected by environmental pollution.
