Angry labourers, contractors and suppliers working for Maytas Infrastructure in the industrial town of Jharsuguda in western Orissa, 300 km off Bhubaneshwar, who took to the streets on Saturday after the company’s officials fled without settling their dues, ended the agitation on Sunday.

This followed promises made by Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL), which had contracted Maytas Infrastructure to build its Jharsuguda township, to compensate them instead.

Maytas, owned by the sons of B Ramalinga Raju, the disgraced ex-chairman of Satyam Computers, was awarded the Rs 232 crore contract in June last year. All attempts to contact its representatives failed.

Maytas, which has completed around 10 per cent of the construction on the project, had employed nearly 1,000 people through local contractors.
