Jewellery showrooms across the country are all decked up to usher in
Akshay Tritiya
on Wednesday and Thursday with a range of discounts to attract the pious. The discounts range from free gold coins with a particular purchase to 10 per cent off on jewellery items to even a free diamond jewellery piece on purchase of two. Traditionally,
Akshay Tritiya
has been a jeweller’s delight in southern India. But, with the growing reach of mass media and marketing, the day has been taken over by marketeers to promote sales and bookings for gold jewellery all over the country.
“Traditionally, gold sales increase on Akhsaya Tritiya and we expect the trend to continue this year. Most families buy gold on this day as they consider it very lucky to do so,” said Ajay Mitra, Managing Director, Indian Subcontinent, World Gold Council. According to Hindu belief, Akshaya Tritiya is the day when the Ganges River, considered India's holiest, descended from heaven.
“Sales usually increase by 30-35 per cent, but primarily of gold jewellery and not studded items. The discounts, the auspicious nature of the festival and the fact that gold prices have come down to Rs 11,600 per 10 gms are incentives for people to buy jewellery,” said Delhi-based jewellery designer Sahil Narula, who has showrooms in Karol Bagh and Gurgaon.
One of the customary gold sale free offers during Akshaya Tritiya is gold coins to customers who make a purchase above a specified amount. For instance D’damas Gold, a Gitanjali Group Enterprise, is offering a free 0.5 gm 995 gold coin on purchase worth Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 and a free 1 gm one on purchase worth Rs 25,000 or more.
Tanishq, in fact, even gives the people an option to select their jewellery piece a week in advance by paying a nominal amount and collecting it on Akshay Tritiya. Apart from this, you can also avail of a 10 per cent discount on the making charges of 22 k gold jewellery and five per cent on the total price of platinum and studded diamond jewellery.
