Expressing concern over killing of farmers in police firing at Nandigram in West Bengal, Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot on Thursday appealed to all political parties to sit together and resolve the land acquisition issue for SEZs.
"Instead of politicising the issue, the parties should find an amicable solution to the whole issue of land acquisition for Special Economic Zones and industrialisation," Dhoot said in a statement in the Capital.
He also appealed to the Centre to expeditiously finalise the rehabilitation policy for farmers, whose land has been acquired for industrialisation. "Due care should be taken so that the cultivable land, to the extent possible, is not taken. Besides, the farmers should be given an adequate compensation package," he said.
The Assocham Chief said continuation of violent protests in Nandigram would send wrong signals to the investors, who were particularly bullish on West Bengal.
Meanwhile, the chamber is organising a brain storming national conference here on March 21, on the issue of land acquisition and rehabilitation for the displaced farmers.
Senior officials from the concerned ministries of the Centre and various states would deliberate on the burning issue.
