BEML bags Rs 1,144 cr Delhi Metro contract

The Rail & Metro Business Group of BEML Limited has won a Rs 1, 144 crore global tender for the manufacture and supply of 156 stainless steel Metro cars from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for its second phase of operation in Delhi. This is the single largest contract ever bagged by the public sector entity.
The Bangalore unit of BEML will manufacture the metro cars that are likely to delivered ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010, a company release said on Thursday.
BEML said it was confident of capturing the metro car market in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, and Tier II cities of the country which are all based on standard gauge. This is the first time that standard gauge metro cars are being made in the country.
BEML's Rail & Metro Business Group had tied up with IL&FS to work as a consortium to bag Metro projects in the country. BEML will supply rolling stock, spares and after sales service for the projects.
BEML is eyeing a turnover of Rs 5,000 crore by 2013-14 to coincide with its Golden Jubilee Year. BEML, formerly Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, is the second largest earth moving equipment manufacturer in Asia and the only manufacturer of Metro Rail cars in India. Currently a Rs 2,600-crore company, BEML's Rail and Metro Business Group offers specialised products such as military-wagons and Mil-rails for the defence sector, and rail coaches and Metro cars for the Indian Railways.
