A senior official with Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL), CS Verma has emerged as the frontrunner in the race for the chairmanship of country’s leading steel company, Steel Authority of India Ltd.
In a meeting of the Public Enterprise Selection Board on February 24, Verma, who is currently director-finance with BHEL, was selected as the first choice for the post while National Buildings Construction Corporation chairman Arup Roychoudhury was the second choice. Current SAIL Chairman Sushil Roongta retires in May.
In all, 23 candidates — senior officials of various PSUs, former employees of SAIL and bureaucrats — were interviewed by PESB after an advertisement stating the vacancy was published a few months ago. The names of the two selected candidates have now been sent to the ministry of steel. After the ministry gives its comments, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by the prime minister will take the final decision.
