The BHEL will execute the project in three years on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis, said a statement from the chief minister's office.

A central public sector undertaking, BHEL is the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in India and is one of the leading companies in the field of power plant equipment.

TS GENCO has an installed power generating capacity of about 4,364 MW of both thermal and hydel and has the technical capability and expertise in the area of installing, owning, operating and maintaining the power plants.

The newly-created state is facing electricity shortage, affecting supplies to domestic, industrial and agriculture sectors.

Meanwhile, Telangana government has decided to purchase 2,000 MW of power to meet the needs of the state. The chief minister Saturday approved calling for bids for purchase of 2000 MW on long term basis.

The government has drawn up massive plans for power generation. It, however, admits that it will take three years for the state to become self sufficient in electricity.
