Bottega Veneta, the Italian luxury brand which is part of the Gucci Group, was launched in Mumbai on November 22.
Its store, opened in partnership with the Murjani Group at the Galleria, Hilton Towers, will offer the Indian luxury goods enthusiast a range of handbags, shoes, small leather goods, belts, eyewear and luggage.
In an exclusive interview with
, Bottega Veneta's creative director Tomas Maier said the idea of the launch is to get the brand closer to the Indians who already shop at Bottega Veneta's boutiques abroad and also to introduce the same to those who are not familiar with the brand. "The Indian consumer is very sophisticated and this market is very dynamic, so our hopes are high in India," he said. "India has a tremendous artistic and cultural heritage so I think the customer's aesthetic sensibility is very strong here. At the same time this is a period of great development in India and there seems to be a very international outlook with respect to fashion."
Bottega Veneta is the second brand from Gucci Group to enter India's booming luxury market. Gucci was launched in Mumbai a few weeks ago and the brands will soon make their entry into the Delhi market as well. "Bottega Veneta's aesthetic is very understated though the craftsmanship is often extravagant," said Maier. "I am confident the Indian consumer will understand and appreciate what we do. There is a global language of design and quality that is understood as well in Mumbai as it is in New York or Paris."
Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 and the brand was acquired by the Gucci Group in 2001. In 2004 luxury conglomerate Pinault-Printemps Redoute (PPR) acquired this Group.
Gucci Group has, under its umbrella, several luxury brands including Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint Laurent, Sergio Rossi, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Bedat & Co, YSL Beautè, Balenciaga and Boucheron.
