Cairn India on Tuesday announced the commencement of its $1-billion crude oil pipeline carrying crude oil from its Mangla oilfields in Rajasthan to the refineries of private companies like Reliance Industries Ltd and Essar Oil in Gujarat.

The first phase of the pipeline that runs between Cairn's Rajasthan's oil fields in Barmer and Gujarat's Salaya is now operational to send oil to private refineries, Cairn said in a statement.

The Mangala oilfield, discovered in January 2004, is the largest onshore oil discovery in India in more than 20 years.

The company said it has completed the 590-km pipeline from the Thar desserts of Rajasthan to Salaya in Gujarat that has enabled the sale of oil to Essar's Vadinar refinery in the state.
