Describing the Railway Budget as 'pro-people' and 'development oriented', the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Friday appreciated it for focussing equally on passenger and freight service.
In a statement here, CII President Venu Srinivasan said Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had taken a very forward looking approach and laid emphasis on private public participation initiative to various innovative and constructive projects such as augmentation of wagon fleet, introduction of modern wagons, coaches, locomotives, and modernisation of stations.
Laying of optic fibre cables and introduction of superfast parcel trains were timely. It would create a win-win situation for all stake holders -- the railways, the wagon manufacturers heavy industries and the common man, he said.
CII Madurai Zone Chairman Bharath KS said the new proposed train in Rameswaram-Madurai-Kanyakumari sector would help the tourism industry. Similarly, the new train between Tirunelveli and Bilaspur would help the industry and trade between south and eastern parts of the country, he said.
