International auction site eBay announced on November 21 an addition to its iPad app which will show US consumers goods listed on eBay related to the TV program that they are watching -- thereby tapping into the so called 'couch commerce' market.

The update to the app comes just in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the unofficial starts to the holiday retail season that follow Thanksgiving in the USA, and is designed to tap into the rising trend of ‘couch commerce' -- a relatively new term referring to the act of shopping online from the sofa using a mobile device often while watching TV.

The latest addition to the eBay app hopes to tap into this ‘couch commerce' trend by synchronizing product recommendations based on what the user is watching on TV.

In order to benefit from these updated features users of the iPad app tap the section ‘Watch with eBay' and enter their zip code, cable provider, channel and program they are currently watching -- using keyword searches drawn from this information the app then recommends merchandise from the eBay marketplace. The iPad app also includes a special 'after dinner' Deal Blast which takes place at 7:00pm ET throughout the holiday season.

Mobile devices are expected to play a greater role in both in-store and online commerce this year with consumers using their devices to browse for products, compare prices and buy goods according to studies from comScore and Nielsen.

The increasing role of mobile devices in commerce this holiday season has also prompted Amazon to launch an Android version of its price comparison app Price Check. Like the iOS version, the Android Price Check, released November 15, enables consumers to compare in-store prices with those on Amazon by taking a picture or scanning the barcode of the product.
