business Updated: Dec 26, 2012 23:00 IST

Google’s business software, Google Apps, which has applications for document writing, collaboration, and text and video communications — all cloud-based — seems to be catching up on Microsoft’s Office suite.

Initially pitched at small businesses, even larger enterprisessuch as Swiss drug maker Hoffmann-La Roche, with over 80,000 employees, and the US Interior Department’ 90,000 employees have switched to Google Apps.

Google is getting traction on Microsoft, said Melissa Webster, an IDC analyst. “Its ‘good enough’ product has become pretty good. It looks like 2013 is going to be the year for content and collaboration in the cloud,” she said.
