Anil Ambani owned Reliance Natural Resources Limited (RNRL) lashed out at the Centre for furnishing an affidavit that does not comply with the Supreme Court rules. Senior counsel Ram Jethmalani replied to the government affidavit filed on Wednesday before a bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.

He said the affidavit, as claimed by the under secretary of ministry of petroleum and natural gas, was based on interpretation of secondary source of information. According to Jethmalani the person under whose name the affidavit is filed has to take the full responsibility of it.

However, the under secretary said that the affidavit’s contents were based on the government records and advice rendered to him. Jethmalani accused the government of working under RIL’s influence and said the advice given to the under secretary must have been of RIL counsel Harish Salve.

“After digging all the mountain and raising rabble, they have produced a mouse; no, not a mouse, but a bandicoot,” said Jethmalani . “The source of information must be clearly spelled out in the affidavit.”

Jethmalani’s argument eventually forced Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to say that NTPC’s affidavit before Bombay High Court was in the same language. Subramanium further added that the affidavit was on behalf of the government, ministry of petroleum and natural gas and NTPC. At this, Jethmalani shot back: “There should be no reason, why the incompetence of the government should be carried here.”
