The new telecom secretary Rakesh Garg has asked telecom operators to be prepared to counter all kinds of attacks on their networks amid growing concerns over data theft by cyber thieves and cyber attacks on Indian websites and mobile phones.
Garg reiterated concerns of cyber security to the telecom industry at an event organised on Sunday by apex telecom industry body CMAI (Communications, Multimedia and Infrastructure). He is likely to hold a meeting soon with operators to discuss this issue.
The communications ministry is also in the process of finalising guidelines for telecom operators to counter cyber attack and cyber terrorism.
A draft note, seen by HT, has outlined three measures to be implemented by the operators immediately and report their compliance — prevention and precautionary measures, recognition of such a cyber threat, the response and mitigation procedures and post incident activity.
The note also suggests a slew of measures such as nomination of a chief information security officer, spelling out of information on security policy and implementation of best practices.
