Hutchi-son enterprise: Pug retires, pup in ad
The dog first became famous with the tagline “Wherever you go, our network follows". Figaro, the little Pug in the Hutch ad, has now handed over the modelling mantle to its son Spike, report Sanjeev Ahuja & Poonam.
Figaro, the little Pug that followed a boy around to everyone’s delight in the Hutch advertisement some years ago, has handed over the modelling mantle to its son — Spike.
The dog, which became famous with the tagline, “Wherever you go, our network follows,” lives in Gurgaon with owner Mohit Gulati. Figaro has won over a hundred awards. It has been named Asia’s best Pug apart from winning the Indian title for three years.
Gulati bought Figaro in the Philippines. The pedigreed Pug’s father is from Australia and grandfather from Britain. Figaro was such a hit that his breed suddenly became one of the most popular in the country — selling for up to Rs 50,000 a pup. A dwarf breed resembling a bulldog, the Pug has a flat nose and a wrinkled face.
Since Hutch became Vodafone, Figaro’s place has been taken by Spike, who stays in Bangalore.
Gulati said Figaro got Rs 12,000 for the Hutch ad. Spike, on the other hand, got Rs 2 lakh for the Vodafone commercial. Figaro has also appeared in a Microsoft ad. Gulati said a Kerala-based trader had once offered him Rs 12 lakh — obviously, he said no.
