India may raise cane support price by 8 per cent to Rs 140 per 100 kg for 2010/11 season to encourage farmers to grow more, the Economic Times newspaper reported on Thursday.

A agricultural price panel has recommended the increase and the federal cabinet will take a decision, the paper said, quoting an unnamed food ministry official.

Sugar output in India, the world's top producer after Brazil, fell 44 per cent to 14.7 million tonnes last year as the worst monsoon in over three decades trimmed cane output.

The sugar season runs from October to September.
