India on Monday raised the issue of visa fee hike by the US, emphasising that the Obama administration's move to increase visa fee would erode the competitiveness of Indian information technology firms.

Commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma took up the issue with visiting US commerce secretary Gary Locke.

"We hope that there will not be any measures which negatively impact on the movement of professionals between the two countries, particularly IT professionals in the US," Sharma said.

The US had recently increased application fees for H1 B and L visas, under which most software and information technology professionals work in the US.

The increase in fee is aimed at creating a $600-million (about Rs2,700-crore) fund for improving security along the Mexican border.

Locke is leading a 24-member high level US business delegation, which will also visit Mumbai and Bangalore.
