IndiGo, the country’s biggest domestic carrier by market share, has conveyed to the aviation ministry that it may order more planes.
“The airline may order up to 80 more planes,” said an aviation ministry official, who did not wish to be named.
The airline had in October said that it would buy 250 new Airbus A320neo planes, the largest single order at Airbus, worth about $25 billion (Rs 1.58 lakh crore).
An IndiGo official, however, denied that the airline was ordering any new planes. “There is nothing new,” the official said.
Officials said with SpiceJet drastically scaling down operations there was enough space for new airlines and existing airlines to bring in more planes.
In 2005, IndiGo had placed an order for 100 Airbus planes, the last of which was recently delivered to the airline. In 2011, it ordered 180 jets, deliveries for which would commence from 2016.
