Flying with your family or friends could pinch you less this summer. IndiGo, the country’s largest domestic carrier by market share announced a special "family fare," under which a group of four or more can get a discount of up to 25%.

"Family fare will offer discount of up to 25% for a family of four or more travelling together in a single PNR (passenger name record), for a maximum of nine passengers. The offer, with effect from May 6, 2014, is valid across all domestic flights and destinations," an airline statement said.

Industry experts say such offers are beneficial both for the customers as well for the airlines. "IndiGo is making sure people continue to fly cheap," said Subhash Goyal, chairman, STIC Travel Group.

"These offers are a win-win for customers and for airlines as it leads to significant demand stimulation while customers get to enjoy discounted fares," said Rajji Rai, chairman, Swift Travel International Ltd.

IndiGo added that partial cancellation of passenger booked under this fare will be possible with the normal cancellation fee, and similarly changes in the flights for one or more passengers are possible with the payment of the normal change fee.

"In order to enhance the overall experience of the families travelling together, our first-of-its kind offer is a benefit to such families," said Aditya Ghosh, president, IndiGo.
