Continuing the good performance, most of the IT stocks including the likes of Infosys and Wipro made significant gains on Wednesday even as shares of Bharat Heavy Electricals declined on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
IT giant Infosys jumped nearly six per cent to end at Rs 1599.95 after touching an intra-day high of Rs 1612.70. More than one lakh shares of the company changed hands during the day's trade.
Bangalore-based Wipro soared 5.35 per cent to Rs 447.35. It had reached an intra-day high of Rs 451.
Among the indices, the 18-share IT index gained the most, increasing 144.02 points or 3.73 per cent to 4,006.50 points.
However, the scrip of Tata Consultancy Services marginally shed 0.07 per cent to close at Rs 974.45.
In addition, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries rose 1.38 per cent to close at Rs 2,644.80. While more than 11 lakh shares of the firm changed hands during the day's trade, the scrip had touched an intra-day high of Rs 2,668.
On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals plunged 3.22 per cent to Rs 1778.15. It had touched an intra-day high of Rs 1864.
Shares of home grown auto major Tata Motors dipped about two per cent to Rs 613.25 after touching an intra-day of Rs 633. Further, Ambuja Cement slipped 3.60 per cent to Rs 112.35 after reaching an intra-day high of Rs 117.95.
