Jobs increase by 7.8% in industries

The number of jobs in industries increased by 7.8% whereas salaries increased by 18.1% in real terms in 2010-11, a government survey of industries has found.

The number of jobs in industries increased by 7.8% whereas salaries increased by 18.1% in real terms in 2010-11, a government survey of industries has found.

The total persons engaged in different industries were 1.27 crore in 2010-11 compared to 1.17 crore in 2009-10, according to the Annual Industries Survey of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The survey said that in current prices, salaries jumped by 24.8% in 2010-12, while in real terms, wages rose by 18.1%.

Among the industries, 'food products' (production units) generated the highest employment of 12.2% followed by textile units at 11.5% and basic metals at 8%.

The sample size of the survey was 61,573 which represent 27% of workforce in all the industries registered under Factories Act, 1948, and Bidi and Cigar Workers (Conditions & Employment) Act, 1966.

Tamil Nadu was leading state in providing employment with 15.4% share, followed by Maharashtra at 13.4%, Andhra Pradesh at 10.3% and Gujarat at 10.1%.
