Kunal Dasgupta, CEO of Sony television, finally had to quit on Thursday, after shareholders last night decided that he needed to go.

The shareholders of Multi Screen Media Private Ltd (erstwhile Sony Entertainment Television India) met at a five-star hotel in Mumbai last evening, where they all agreed that Dasgupta must be told to quit, one of the Indian shareholders, who did not want to be named, said.

Dasgupta had joined Sony as its CEO in 1995 even before the first of the channels were launched. Minority Indian shareholders had been campaigning against Dasgupta for the last four-five years alleging improprieties in the management of the company.

The shareholder did not say what was the final trigger was for all the shareholders to decision on removing Dasgupta.

Sony Pictures International is the majority owner of Multi Screen Media with about 60 per cent stake. The Indian owners include actor Jackie Shroff, Shemaroo Films’ Raman Maroo and Singapore-based businessman Sudesh Iyer.

When contacted, Dasgupta hung up the phone before any questions could be asked. He also did not respond to an SMS seeking his version of the story.
