Sri Lanka's economy is expected to expand five per cent in 2009, stronger than previously forecast, the government said on Thursday, after the country reached a $2.5 billion loan accord with IMF.

"Sri Lanka's economy will grow by five percent by the end of this year," the government's information department said, quoting Export Development and International Trade Minister GL Peiris.

The central bank on July 1 revised up the $40 billion economy's 2009 economic growth forecast to 3.5-4.5 per cent from a minimum of 2.5 per cent due to improved growth prospects after the end of a 25-year separatist war.
