Almost after a gap of three decades, Gadchiroli, one of the most backward and arid districts in Vidarbha region, would soon have four lift irrigation projects, Minister of State for Irrigation, Vijay Wadettiwar said on Friday.
"The last irrigation project implemented in Gadchiroli was in 1980. After gap of 29 years, the state government has planned four lift irrigation projects for the district," he told reporters here.
"Besides irrigating 13,000 hectares, the projects would also generate 24 MW of power," he said.
The minister said a token provision of Rs two crore has been made for the projects, which would come up in Dongergaon, Chamorshi and Aheri taluka places. The total cost is likely to go upto Rs 40 crores each, he added.
Besides this, the state government has allocated Rs 100 crore for certain projects including extension of Wadsa Desai Ganj rail line upto Gadchiroli, Wadettiwar said.
A budgetary provision has been made for the first time, he said. The state government has also sanctioned a College of Agriculture, the first of its kind in Gadchiorli district and allocated Rs 9.5 crore for the same, he added.
