The benchmark Sensex gained for the eight straight session on Tuesday, the longest winning streak this year, adding 43 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange following sustained buying by funds in heavyweight stocks.
The Sensex added 43.35 points to settle at 15,465.40 points after touching the day's high of 15,521.48 and a low of 15,389.62 points.
The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also rose by 4.50 points at 4,479.25, after peaking to 4,501.30 and touching a low of 4,460.40 points.
Major support to the market came in from realty, healthcare and capital goods segment stocks. Realty index rose the most by 136.98 points at 7,462.48, followed by healthcare index by 49.03 points at 3,680.36. Capital goods index rose by 43.83 points at 13,632.61.
As the buying activity spilled over a wide front, the BSE smallcap index rose by 76.50 points at 8,270.95 and midcap index by 45.85 points at 6,765.92.
Marketmen said the sentiment was firm but a bank holiday for Janmashtmi reduced the volume of business. They said some of the bankers were absent from the market for the holiday.
