Microsoft restructures as it shuts MSN TV

business Updated: Jul 09, 2013 22:42 IST

Highlight Story

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s intention to restructure the company last fall took shape with several internal portfolios being reassigned while service priorities were refocussed.

Some of the rejig involves the company’s Redmond-based head Julie Larson-Green overseeing hardware engineering for all devices throughout the entire company and Skype President Tony Bates taking over acquisitions and relationships with software developers. Windows OS engineering would be folded into the portfolio of current Windows Phone software head Terry Myerson, while Satya Nadella, who currently heads the server business, would control the cloud computing division. Qi Lu, who runs the online group, would manage the engineering units of Bing, Office and Skype.

The software giant also announced a possible shut down of its subscription based internet television service, MSN TV.

The predecessor of many modern internet TV services, MSN TV was purchased by Microsoft in 1997 for $425 million, and requires a significant amount of hardware including a set-top box and bespoke keyboard.
