The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry has begun consultations in a move to allow private FM radio stations to broadcast news.
I&B minister Ambika Soni said on Monday that the ministry has circulated a note for inter-ministerial consultations on the issue. “We expect to present the note to cabinet before the end of this financial year. It may be as soon as January,” Soni said.
“The FM channels will be allowed to source news only from the All India Radio,” she said.
The minister said broadcast of news through them would extend the dissemination of news to a great extent and bring a large number of people under its purview.
“Certain sections of news like sports, weather updates, employment related news, local news could and should be broadcast on the FM channels,” she said.
