Ashok Chand, Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) warns about the gangs that use mobile phones to go about their businesses.
Since when did you start receiving complaints of such calls?
We know about gangs that cheat people through e-mails but this is something new. Our team traced one such gang that operates from across the border. We had busted one such gang and if complainants came forward, we will further investigate the case.
Have you tracked the modus operandi of the gang?
One gang earns money by asking mobile users to deposit money in their account if they want to win a lottery. Others earn money through call rates. They give missed calls and if a person calls back, he/she would be charged heavily.
What precautions can be taken?
Awareness will help. One should be intelligent enough to understand that there is no such thing like free lottery. Such gangs have always been there. Earlier they used the Internet. Now they are targeting mobile users.
