‘Policy lacks a long-term vision’

business Updated: Aug 10, 2009 22:55 IST

Captain GR Gopinath feels that the Prime Minister can make it happen and the low cost airlines are here to stay. Excerpts of the interview with Lalatendu Mishra.

Why are airlines in trouble?
“They are solely to be blamed. They failed to build a viable business model for masses. The aviation policy is also to be blamed.

Why so?
The policy lacks a long-term vision. Aviation sector is much broader than airlines and airports. The ministry can’t handle it. Let the Prime Minister look at it. Let him study it. If he concludes that we don’t need a viable sector, fine. But an attempt must be made.

Why are airlines and airport owners fighting?
Everybody is blaming one another and fighting for their rights selfishly. Nobody is thinking for the large interest. This is why we need a policy for the benefit of the public.
