The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd, was incorporated on April 2, 1976. It has the unique distinction of implementing and operating both hydro and thermal power plants right from concept to commissioning. Excerpts from a talk with its chairman and managing director I.P. Barooah.
What is the present power generating capacity of NEEPCO?
NEEPCO today operates five hydro and two thermal power stations spread over the north-eastern region of India with a total installed capacity of 1130 MW, out of which 755 MW is in hydro and 375 MW is gas-based thermal sectors. It caters to more than 60 per cent of the region's energy requirement.
How many Projects of NEEPCO are presently under construction and how many units of power are these projects going to generate?
At present, NEEPCO has undertaken three projects under execution. A yearly generation of 5100 mega units approximately is expected from these projects. However, the benefit from these projects will be accrued during the 12 th Five Year Plan.
How many mega watts of power are you going to add during the 12th Five Year Plan?
NEEPCO has charted out plans for expansion of its domain by taking up various projects for execution in the 12th Five Year Plan. Three projects — Mawphu HEP 85 MW, AGTP CC 40 MW and Garo Hills Thermal Project 500 MW — have been planned for execution during the 12th Plan. Thus, in terms of capacity addition, by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan (2016-17), NEEPCO plans to add around 1495 MW and thereby raising its installed capacity to 2625 MW.
How is the profitability pattern of your Corporation?
The corporation has earned a record profit before tax of R337.41 crore during fiscal year 2009-10 against last year’s figure of R326.88 crore. The corporation has registered a profit of to register a profit of more than R200 crore during the last seven consecutive years, thereby maintaining a steady growth.
Can you elaborate on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of the corporation?
Since its inception, NEEPCO has always given top priority towards all-round development of the people residing in and around its operational areas. As a responsible corporate citizen, NEEPCO has undertaken various community development activities particularly in the field of education, health, infrastructure development and other community needs. The Corporation is committed to discharge larger responsibilities towards the society in future with the following objectives. During the last financial year (2009-10) a total of R2.11 crore were earmarked for different CSR activities.
