Infosys on Saturday appointed Rohan Murty, son of co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, as executive assistant to the newly-appointed executive chairman.

“Rohan Murty will be my executive assistant. He has no leadership role,” Murthy said at a press conference in Bangalore, noting that SD Shibulal remained the managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the company and that Infosys has competent executive directors on the board and a “very strong” cadre of senior management.

“So, therefore, the only role that Rohan has is to make me more effective. That’s it,” Murthy said in response to queries on whether his son was being groomed for a larger role in Infosys.

Rohan, thus, becomes the first promoter’s son to join Infosys. Murthy and the other co-promoters of Infosys have always maintained that their children will not follow them into the company, as is the practice in most family-run businesses in India.

Rohan Murty, who is married to Lakshmi, daughter of Venu Srinivasan, chairman, TVS Motors, and Mallika Srinivasan, chairperson, TAFE, holds a PhD in computer science from Harvard University. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Cornell University.

On approval of his appointment, Rohan Murty’s term as executive assistant to the chairman would be co-terminus with that of Narayana Murthy. Murty has requested that he be paid only a token compensation of Re 1 per year.
