The rupee depreciated by 12 paise to Rs 51.90 against the American currency on the Interbank Foreign Exchange in early trade on Wednesday, weighed down by dollar's gains against other currencies overseas.

Forex dealers said besides dollar's gains against other Asian currencies, increased demand for the American currency from importers also put pressure on the local unit but a higher opening in equities capped the losses.

The rupee had ended 31 paise lower at 51.78/79 against the dollar in the previous session on strong dollar demand from importers.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex rose by 53.18 points, or 0.31%, at 17,445.57 in early trade.
