Samsonite eyes lifestyle, sees opportunity in eyewear biz

Luggage maker Samsonite India is now looking to introduce its eyewear range under the Samsonite brand. The company, which also has shoes, wallets and belts under its portfolio, wants to position itself as a lifestyle brand.

"Our flagship is growing at 42% annually and this could be a good opportunity to expand our portfolio," said Subrata Dutta, managing sirector, Samsonite India.

At present, the non-luggage product range contributes about 32% to the company's sales in India, estimated at Rs 750 crore in 2010.

"We aim to doubling sales every two years in India," said Dutta.

The company has three brands - Samsonite Black Label, Samsonite and American Tourister - in its portfolio.

It has 250 stores across India, of which 180 are exclusive Samsonite stores and the rest are of American Tourister brand.
