Continuing its downslide for the third straight session, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Thursday lost 76 points in early trade on funds selling in heavy-weight stocks on fears of an imminent hike in fuel prices.

The 30-share index, which had lost 100.62 points yesterday, fell further by 76.61 points to 15,885.95 in the first five minutes of trade.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved down by 26.15 points to 4,689.75.

Marketmen said fears of an imminent hike in fuel prices and weakening trends in global stock markets continued to dampen the trading sentiments here.

Major losers which pulled the Sensex down were - Reliance Industries, HDFC Ltd, BHEL, Larsen and Toubro, Mahindra and Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computers and Wipro.
