The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex spurted by over 420 points in pre-close trading on Thursday on agressive buying by funds, triggered by better-than-expected corporate earnings and firming Asian markets.

Covering-up of short positions by speculators also supported the rally.

The Sensex, which had gained nearly 255 points in early trade, continued its upward march and quoted 420.28 points higher at 15,263.40 points in pre-close trade.

In similar fashion, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty flared up by 129.70 points to 4,528.60.

Brokers said rally on other Asian equity markets with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rising by 2.96 per cent and encouraging quarterly earnings by blue-chip companies mainly buoyed the trading sentiments.

They said, however, subdued opening in European markets, capped gains on the domestic bourses.
Major gainers which supported the Sensex were Reliance Industries, Infosys Technologies, ICICI Bank and Maruti Suzuki.
