Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde sought higher gas allocations from the petroleum ministry to step up the country’s power generation capacity.

“I would also be taking up matter with the ministry of petroleum and natural gas to allocate gas to support a capacity of about 15,000 mega watt in view of coal supply situation and to reduce our carbon emissions,” Shinde said at a conference.

State-run NTPC, which requires 15-16 mmscmd of gas per day for its gas-based power plants, said that it has floated a tender for sourcing 2.5 mmscmd of liquefied natural gas for firing its power projects.
