Infosys has decided to appoint Rohan Murty, son of Infosys chairman NR Narayana Murthy, as vice-president.

Murty, 31, who spells his surname without an ‘h’, is currently his father’s executive assistant. He accompanies the chairman to all important meetings and also holds strategy sessions with senior Infosys executives.

“It is clear that he is part of the senior management team,” said a senior executive on condition of anonymity.

This appointment has further fed speculation that Murty, a PhD in computer science from Harvard, will eventually play a bigger role in the company.

His father and the other co-founders of Infosys had maintained that their children would not join the company.

“Rohan Murty’s appointment at Infosys is yet to be approved by the ministry of corporate affairs. His designation will be confirmed once the process has been completed,” Infosys said in response to a query from HT.

The appointment of Murty as executive assistant on June 1, the day his father came out of retirement to rejoin Infosys as executive chairman, had raised eyebrows. “His job is to make me more effective,” Murthy had said then.

“Under the goods and services tax act, a company that enters into an agreement with a director or his family needs permission from the government.

Strictly speaking, Murty’s appointment does not come under the purview of the act. But we have still decided to seek clearance to ensure that all laws are complied with,” an Infosys spokesperson explained.
