The ministry of External Affairs is considering outsourcing passport processing to ensure that passports are delivered within three days of application anywhere in the country.
Soon, it will also be possible to apply for passports online and know within hours whether one is eligible to get a passport or not, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told reporters on Saturday.
“We are trying to see what part of the (passport) process can be outsourced,” the Foreign Secretary said at the Indian Council of World Affairs.
Menon was speaking on the sidelines of the release of Asian Diplomacy: The Foreign Ministries of China, India, Japan, Singapore and Thailand authored by former diplomat Kishan S Rana.
He said the MEA was taking a series of complementary steps to streamline its functioning. An intranet for the diplomatic corps and a management information system would be in place in two months, he said.
In addition to increasing the size of the Indian Foreign Service, Menon said the Ministry is going in for a “complete overhaul” of the promotions and assessments policy. As part of this, mandatory mid-career training will be introduced, he added.
