Day 10 of spectrum auction witnessed brisk but cautious bidding across bandwidths with the amount committed by bidders remaining over Rs 1 lakh crore — at Rs 1,02,215 crore.
Spectrum, the radio frequencies necessary for mobile devices to send and receive voice and data, are critical for operators to provide good connectivity, higher voice quality and data communication.
On Saturday, six rounds of bidding were completed for auction of spectrum in 800, 900, 1800 and 2100 megahertz bands. The total quantum of spectrum put up for auction is 380.75 MHz. Till now, 61 rounds of bidding have taken place and about 87% of the spectrum has been provisionally allocated.
Spectrum in 900 megahertz (2G) is critical, especially for operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications and Idea, whose licenses will come up for renewal in 2015-16. “Bidding will commence on Monday again,” said an official statement.
