Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and is believed to have apprised her on fiscal and monetary options available with the government and RBI to cool inflation that has touched a 13-year-high of 11.05 per cent.
Gandhi also met the Chief Ministers of Congress-ruled Haryana and Delhi -- Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Sheila Dikshit -- who apprised her of the measures that their governments are taking to streamline the public distribution system and check hoardings of essential commodities.
The Congress party said yesterday that it would ask the government to sacrifice economic growth for giving the common man relief from high prices, especially of food articles.
High inflation, which has mainly been fuelled by runaway crude prices, has escalated worries for the Congress-led UPA government in an election year.
The Congress party had also asked the government to convene a meeting of all Chief Ministers and state Finance Ministers to explore steps to control inflation.
