Eighty-two cargo containers that were supposed to transport steel scrap from Dubai were found to be empty when they were opened at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.
The police said four city-based companies had struck a deal with a Dubai-based firm to purchase steel scrap. The companies had made a partial payment of about Rs 1.25 crore to the Gulf-based firm through a shipping agent after a tip-off that the cargo had been uploaded on the Mumbai-bound ship. The Economic Offences Wing of the city police is investigating the case.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said the material had been despatched from Dubai’s Jebel Ali port on August 27. The containers were found to be empty when the companies’s authorised agents went to the Mumbai port to claim the consignment, he said.
Maria said they suspected the goods had either not been uploaded in Dubai or were stolen at the Mumbai port.
