The Indian software industry created 280,000 jobs over the last 15 years in the US, and paid $15 billion to its treasury. And it is now seeking recognition, that too in an election year when it is bound to come under attack, along with China, for taking away American jobs.

Nasscom
has released a report detailing Indian IT’s contributions to the US economy, in a hostile environment marked by rejection of visas in the professional categories H1 and L1.

“It is a critical situation,” said Nasscom chief Som Mittal.

Rejections have gone up by up to 22% when the numbero for such visas issued by the US worldwide has gone up by 4% according to a US think tank.

The Indian industry has blamed these on continued economic crisis in the US and high unemployment figures, at over 8% now.

President Barack Obama has in his speeches criticised outsourcing — both manufacturing, to China, and service, to India — promising to bring back these jobs.
