125 apple procurement centres opened under market intervention scheme

In an attempt to procure C-grade apples and ensure remunerative prices to apple growers, the state government on Thursday opened 125 collection centres under the market intervention scheme (MIS).

A spokesperson of the horticulture department said 117 collection centres had been opened in Shimla district, seven in Mandi district and one in Chamba district.

The centres would be managed by the Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Market Committee (HPMC) and Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Marketing and Consumers Federation Limited (HIMFED).

He said 16 metric tonnes of apples had been procured under MIS so far and nearly 272 centres were opened under the MIS across the state last year.

In 2010, the HPMC had procured 65,000 metric tonnes of apples at `5.25 per kg. Last year, the state had harvested nearly 3.20 crore boxes of 20 kg each and had procured 18 metric tonnes of apples at `6.50 per kg. However, the government could not achieve the target of procuring 90,343 tonnes of apples at the rate of Rs 6.50 per kg last year.
