Giving the nod to the proposal of the water supply and sanitation department for a sewerage system in rural areas, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday okayed 142 villages to be covered under the central government's Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA).

Stating this here, a spokesperson for the CM's office said Rs 1,215 crore would be spent on this scheme, which would benefit nearly 10.56 lakh people living in these villages having a population of more than 5,000 each.

As per guidelines of flexi funds under the NBA scheme, 75% of the grant is contributed by the Centre and the remaining by the state government. Therefore, nearly Rs 300 crore would be given by the state government for laying sewerage lines in these villages.
