Two 17-year-old girls, hailing from Salwan village in Kar nal district, reportedly committed suicide in their hostel room at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Sector 2, Panchkula. The girls — Himandari and Bindu Rani — were 1st semester students of Diploma in Education.
On Tuesday morning, when the two did not come out of the room, located on the first floor, till late, other students used a ladder to peep into the room and found them hanging from fans, DIET principal Sushma Munjal said. The police were informed and the door was broken down.
“No suicide note has been recovered from the room, which was locked from inside. Their luggage and belongings are being scanned. We are ruling out any foul play,” said DCP Hamid Akhtar. The victims had returned after a vacation on December 28. The institute did not allow hostellers to keep mobile phones, which were given to them in the evening to talk to their parents.
“I have no clue why they committed suicide. They played volleyball in the evening and had met friends around 11 pm,” the principal added.
On reports that the girls were upset after being scolded for playing volleyball on Saturday, she replied, “They were asked not to play in the rain and had realised their mistake.”
After the incident, the institute directed all the girls to vacate the hostel and sent them home. The post-mortem has been conducted and the cause of death has been identified as hanging. Sexual assault has been ruled out.
