As 18-year-old Varsha Yadav stepped out of her hostel on the campus of Guru Jambeshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST) on Friday morning, little did she know that her stalker, whose proposal she had rejected, would be waiting for her with a knife. Varsha - who was about to board a three-wheeler to go home on a three-day holiday — was allegedly murdered in broad daylight by Chetan Sheoran, 21.
He attacked the girl with a knife and slit her throat. On hearing the girl scream, the university security staff rushed towards the scene of crime and nabbed Sheoran. Varsha, however, died on the spot.
The 18-year-old girl was unlucky. Sheoran had been trying to woo Varsha for a year now. But after she turned him down, Sheoran decided to kill her. Varsha's mother said that soon after he began stalking her. The girl was so scared of Sheoran's continuous stalking that she decided to live in the hostel of her university, though her house was just 10 kilometres away, she added.
The girl's father, Dharam Pal Yadav, is a havaldar in the Border Security Force, posted at Hisar camp. He is presently in Delhi for the August 15 parade. The police said the youth had confessed to the crime. "The accused said that the 'girl had ruined my life. And I have killed her'," superintendent of police B.Satheesh said.
"It was a one-sided love affair. The boy was stalking the girl for quite some time. His frustration led to this ghastly crime," the SP added. The body has been handed over to the family of the girl. GJUST pharmacy department head S.K.Sharma accompanied the bereaved family to their native village near Rewari for the last rites. Sheoran is a resident of Prem Nagar in Rohtak.
