Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Tuesday urged Union home minister Rajnath Singh to release Rs 5-lakh compensation each to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, as had been decided a month ago.

Harsimrat said she had met the Union home minister thrice in the past two months to press for this demand as the entire Sikh community had welcomed the announcement of the compensation and wanted it to be distributed among the victims at the earliest.

“I have urged the home minister to expedite the implementation of this decision, besides taking the next series of steps to ensure justice to the victims of the 1984 carnage and bring closure to their sufferings,” she added.

She also demanded daily hearing of cases to expedite justice for the riot victims. Harsimrat said successive Congress governments at the Centre had created obstacles to ensure that the kingpins of the carnage were not brought to book.

She also demanded action against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar for his alleged involvement in the Nangloi case.
