Dalwinder Kaur Dhesi and Paramjit Singh Raipur, co-convicts in a case of abduction and forcible abortion of Harpreet Kaur, daughter of former cabinet minister and main accused Bibi Jagir Kaur, have moved the Punjab and Haryana high court challenging the Patiala CBI court's verdict sentencing them to five years in prison.

The high court admitted their petitions on Tuesday and issued notices to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on their bail applications for May 29.

A special CBI court in Patiala had, on March 30, convicted and awarded five years' jail each to Jagir Kaur, Nishan Singh, Dhesi and Raipur, though acquitting them of the graver charge of murder. The high court has already admitted Jagir Kaur and Nishan Singh's petitions challenging their conviction. All the convicts are lodged in Kapurthala jail.

Harpreet, daughter of Bholath MLA Jagir Kaur, was cremated without conducting post-mortem after her death under mysterious circumstances on April 20, 2000. Jagir Kaur had claimed that Harpreet died as a result of food poisoning.

But later a case was registered as Harpreet's lover Kamaljit Singh filed a complaint alleging that since Jagir Kaur was against their relationship, she was behind Harpreet's death. A total of seven persons were tried, of which two were acquitted and one died during trial.
