Two people were killed and two others injured when their car collided head on with a truck on the national highway close to Kayanpur village near here early on Friday morning, causing a massive traffic snarlup.
The accident took place around 2am when the four men, all of them residents of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, were on their way to Manali.
As they neared Kalyanpur, a truck (registration no: HP23 B5215), loaded with cement bags coming from the other direction, crashed into their car (HR26 BV7516).
Rajnish, 42, who was driving the car, was killed on the spot, while another of its occupants, Udeyvir Singh, died on the way to a hospital. The other two passengers, Prem Pal and Mukul, sustained critical injuries and were taken to the civil hospital in Anandpur Sahib from where they were referred to the Rupnagar civil hospital.
Due to the impact of the collision both the car and the truck caught fire and were almost entirely burnt, despite efforts by firemen to douse the flames.
The police has filed a case against the truck driver, who fled the accident scene and is yet to be unidentified.
